Muay Thai or Thai boxing and kickboxing, along with boxing, are recognised as a foundation for striking in mixed martial arts, and are both widely practiced and taught. Although both may seem identical, each has different techniques. Muay Thai originated in Thailand, and is known as the "art of eight limbs", which refers to the use of the legs, knees, elbows and fists.[100] One of the primary benefits of training in Muay Thai for MMA is its versatility. Techniques cover the long, middle and short range with everything from kicks to clinch holds and throws.[101] Meanwhile, kickboxing is a group of stand-up combat martial arts based on kicking and punching. The modern style originated in Japan and is developed from Karate and Muay Thai. Many MMA fighters use Muay Thai as the basis for their striking game and amateur kickboxing matches aren’t hard to come by. It’s probably best that you leave mixed martial arts fighting to the professionals in the UFC and watch it from the safety of your couch. How is it that simulating a fight through shadow boxing can lead to more efficient, effective, and faster striking? Well, there is a ton of research on the benefits of deliberate practice for building fluency (i.e. performing automatically, quickly, and accurately) with any skill. Fluency results in relaxation. Relaxation results in effortless speed and power. Consider the 100-meter sprinter. He runs his best time when he’s running hard but relaxed. This relaxed exertion requires the fighter to find the right balance through practice to keep the tension out of his shoulders while directing his energy to strike at the opportune time. Relaxed exertion also positively impacts endurance-capabilities as it allows the fighter to be highly efficient in their striking.

But the sport is growing fast and the Sports Ministry has given direct permission to host events to the biggest and oldest MMA Organization in the country - the All India Mixed Martial Arts Association (AIMMAA).[225] AIMMAA is also the sole representative of the Global Mixed Martial Arts Federation in India.

For combat sports, tempo intervals can be applied in many different forms, ranging from general activities like the sprints that Francis used, to more specific drills such as hitting the heavy bag or doing pad work. The important thing is that the intensity of the work intervals is kept at 75% or less of your maximum with the duration no more than 12-15 seconds. You can rest between intervals for 1 minute or until your heart rate comes down to 130-135, whichever comes first.


This article is great. MMA really prepares you for life threatening situations. Sometimes when it goes down, fighting is your means of survival. Still, in order do this or to become a good MMA fighter you should really train hard. I mean, champions had to work their way to the top. MMA fighters do a high volume of work every week. Drilling, sparring, mitts, bag work, and other aspects are intense and they are all taxing on the body. If you are going to add a strength and conditioning plan on top of that volume of work, it has to be well thought out and compliment an existing plan. Way too many trainers, athletes, and coaches create programs from scratch, hearsay, YouTube videos, or past experience. Their main goal is simply to work hard, without taking other aspects of the fighters’ training or life into consideration. In Ancient Greece, there was a sport called pankration, which featured a combination of grappling and striking skills similar to those found in modern MMA. Pankration was formed by a combination of the already established wrestling and boxing traditions and, in Olympic terms, first featured in the 33rd Olympiad in 648 BC. All strikes and holds were allowed with the exception of biting and gouging, which were banned. The fighters, called pankratiasts, fought until someone could not continue or signaled submission by raising their index finger; there were no rounds.[11][12] According to E. Norman Gardiner, 'No branch of athletics was more popular than the pankration.'[13] From its origins in Ancient Greece, pankration was later passed on to the Romans.[14]
I appreciate it when you pointed out that since mixed martial arts involves proper sleeping, eating, and resting in order to be successful, doing this will teach a person about discipline. If so, then I need to give this a try since I am slightly less disciplined than my brother. Since I am also pretty much weak in terms of body, doing this will benefit me a lot.
Notes on Time Under Tension (TUT): Time under Tension method is well known as very effective in increasing strength, muscle size, or muscle endurance depending on how you use it. When you look at TUT you look at the total amount of work you place on a muscle and the total time muscles resist weight during each set. For example, you could do 5 chin ups with the tempo of 1 sec up, 2 sec hold at the top position, 3 sec lowering down. The time to perform each rep will be 6 seconds, with a total of 5 reps. Therefore the total TUT for this set is 30 seconds.
Along with varying training intensity, there are many other factors that affect a fighter’s performance and health. Stress reduction, proper nutrition, sufficient sleep, and other recovery techniques are vital to a fighter’s health and performance over time. Like I said before, most of these guys already train too much, are banged up, and are nursing some type of injury. The “more is better” mentality usually leaves them tired, injured, or burned out if it is not addressed.

Fighting professionally for 18 years has made the 40-year-old Jackson smarter about his training. Over time, “Rampage” has learned that he can’t do without basic moves like pushups. He does a ton of them, logging anywhere from 100 to 200 per session in 25-rep installments. Jackson has found them useful for giving him strength towards the end of fights. “It’s really important to lift your own body weight for some reason,” Jackson says. “You want to have that conditioning strength to where you’re strong the whole fight. You don’t just want to be strong in the beginning. You want to be strong even at the end of the fight.”

But please note that it’s not just any reps, these should be high-quality reps with deliberate focus on specific skills and strategies. Hi, thankyou for writing this blog and gave me a insight on the mma theory as I’ve been studying and training in mma for six months after returning 14 years away and experienced domestic violence from my former husband and couldn’t take the pain let alone allow my demons to control me no more also wished my children to have a better future as they too train with me in taekwondo, Hapkido but I also do cage and muay Thai kickboxing as well. I begun with boxing and weight training in the gym last February and rejoined the mma world where I’ve found myself again but I’m facing one obstacle and I’m too hard on myself when I train. I tend to punish myself if I don’t get a certain technique perfected and I punish myself through more training Til I get it right. My teammates are terrific when they encourage and assure me but I still punish myself as I want it to get all perfected even just once. I know this presents ego behaviour but I want to make myself, my children, my friends, family, teammates, teachers even those I idolise to be proud of me. One of the most important training methods for self defense involves conditioning effective default responses to surprise attacks. Take a look at our self defense techniques section to see several examples of default responses and combinations. Your default response techniques need to work against a wide range of attacks, such that a counter ingrained subconsciously will work when you're not sure which particular attack is coming. We do this through the MMA Base, which consists of boxing, Thai boxing, stand-up wrestling, and Brazilian jiu jitsu. You don't have to become a high level MMA fighter, but you do need to train against completely uncooperative opponents attempting to kick, punch, and wrestle with you. Otherwise, you will not be prepared for it if it happens on the street.
Search online for classes in your area. Do a search online and look for gyms, dojos, and clubs that offer fighting or martial arts classes in your area. See if you can find general MMA classes that have both striking and grappling included in their curriculum. If a hybrid gym doesn't exist, you may have to go to more than one gym to build both your grappling and striking skills.[3]
