If you’ve ever seen a mixed martial arts (MMA) fight, you’ve probably noticed the athletes’ impressive physiques, which are largely due to their intense training regimens and nutritional habits. While you may not have time to train as intensely as a professional athlete, you can incorporate some of their strength-training moves into your workouts and start developing a notable six-pack of your own.
“This is 70% of the entire plan. I can work out religiously, but if I’m not eating clean, I’m wasting my time. I eat five small meals a day that consist of protein, good carbs, and veggies. No cheat meals except once on Sunday. Here is a sample day of meals (accompanied by one gallon of water per day) that will get me into lean and mean fighting shape.”
In 2011, the Ranik Ultimate Fighting Federation (RUFF) hosted the first MMA event in Shanghai sanctioned by China's governing body for combat sports, the Wushu Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport in China. Seems pretty obvious, but how often do you see trainers who have an ambition to make their fighters the best deadlifters, best sprinters, marathon runners, or even Olympic lifters. The goal is the goal. I know only one example where the gym became a sport and that is CrossFit. If you want to be good in the CrossFit Games, CrossFit training is the way to go, but it doesn’t mean it is a good way to train a fighter. Quite the opposite. To give another example, what works for a powerlifter will not necessarily work for a fighter. Work on the programs with the goal in mind, remember to test and assess your athletes. If you find out that poor mobility is what stops your athlete from increasing strength, address the mobility first before putting more weight on the bar.

What to expect: If you want to hit people, this isn’t the place to be. The only time strikes are thrown are during kata or forms, which are pre-arranged fight scenarios designed to practice defending against strikes and show off the capabilities of Judo. You can also expect to get thrown on the ground. A lot. In fact, it’s likely that every session, or at least most of them, will be spent practicing falling so it’ll hurt less when you get taken down.

Offenders attack those who can’t defend themselves and don’t matter what area you’re from or visiting.
Regulated mixed martial arts competitions were first introduced in the United States by CV Productions, Inc.. Its first competition, called Tough Guy Contest was held on March 20, 1980, New Kensington, Pennsylvania, Holiday Inn. During that year the company renamed the brand to Super Fighters and sanctioned ten regulated tournaments in Pennsylvania. In 1983, Pennsylvania State Senate passed a bill that specifically called for: "Prohibiting Tough Guy contests or Battle of the Brawlers contests", and ended the sport.[5][6][38] In 1993, the sport was reintroduced to the United States by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).[39] The sport gained international exposure and widespread publicity when jiu-jitsu fighter Royce Gracie won the first Ultimate Fighting Championship tournament, submitting three challengers in a total of just five minutes.[40] sparking a revolution in martial arts.[41][42]

What to expect: At the core of most jiu jitsu training is what’s called “rolling,” which is basically wrestling. You’ll either be rolling gi—in which you wear a traditional uniform—or no gi, which usually just involves a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. Submission-Seeking is a reference to the strategy of taking an opponent to the ground using a takedown or throw and then applying a submission hold, forcing the opponent to submit. While grapplers will often work to attain dominant position, some may be more comfortable fighting from other positions. If a grappler finds themselves unable to force a takedown, they may resort to pulling guard, whereby they physically pull their opponent into a dominant position on the ground.[137]
In general, fighters who cannot win fights through lightning offense, or are more suited to win fights in the later rounds or via decision are commonly known as grinders. Grinders aim to shut down their opponent's game plan and chip away at them via clinching, smothering and ground-and-pound for most of the rounds. Prominent examples of grinders are Pat Healy,[143] and Chael Sonnen.[144]
It's not a traditional bodybuilding workout, but MMA fighting works all of the muscle groups in the body. For instance, hitting the heavy bag is equivalent to lifting weights. When your back is against the cage and you're working to get your opponent off you, that's equivalent to doing weighted squats and bench presses. You do training camps to prepare for fights, and that means sticking to your diet religiously and working out hard. It's not an easy lifestyle, but it keeps you fit.
Work on your strength and conditioning. Even though training and practicing technique is essential, it's also important that you work to improve your strength and endurance. Squats, deadlifts, and bench presses combined with regular sprinting, jump rope, and stretching will make you stronger, quicker, and more flexible. Designate one or two days a week in your training to work on your strength and conditioning along with your technique training.[15]

Integrate explosive resistance training. Fighter training is all about explosive power, and resistance training is an effective way to improve this. Granted, every weightlifting session doesn't have to focus on power, but try to incorporate this type of training, utilizing plyometrics, such as box jumps or medicine ball thrusts, or powerlifting techniques, once or twice a week. Perform two to four sets of six to 10 reps for each plyometric exercise.

Another example of what not to do is to judge the skill of a knife fighter by the way he holds his weapon. The bottom line is, you should always assume that your adversary is an expert in all forms of street fighting combat. You must always respond to what the assailant is doing in the fight and not what he seems capable of doing. Deal with the here and now and not the what ifs!

Include flexibility training to your regimen, but don’t try to be at contortionist. Include stretching into your training regimen, however don’t get hung up on being able to do the splits, put your foot behind your head, or bending yourself like a pretzel. Stretching is good to help prevent injuries, and keep your body more flexible. However don’t tear your muscles and tendons trying to become more flexible. Stretch lightly after your workouts when your body is warm. Don’t stretch before a workout, that is the way to pull or even rip a muscle. Doing most exercises to their full range of motion is a great way to stretch while you are working out. A lot of times you won’t need extra stretching after a workout, but if you feel tight after a workout, that is the best time to lightly stretch.
